Making a Japanese RGB Cable
Thursday, June 8th, 2006Recently I have bought a second handed XRGB-2 Plus Upscan Converter to connect my PS2 to an LCD display. Originally I tried with an S-Video cable but the image and color quality are both not very satisfactory. So I searched around the web and learnt that if the RGB socket on the front panel of XRGB-2 Plus is used instead, the image quality will be much better!
However, the RGB cable used to connect to PS2 is not included in the package. The socket looks like an Euro SCART socket but it's not, it only accepts Japanese RGB pinout cables, which have to be purchased separately and is not generally available.
As a last resort, I purchased a Euro SCART cable and tried to rewire it according to this scheme:
Signal : Euro SCART -> Japanese RGB
- Red : 15 -> 15
- Red Shield : 13 -> 13
- Green : 11 -> 19
- Green Shield : 9 -> 17
- Blue : 7 -> 20
- Blue Shield : 5 -> 18
- Sync : 20 -> 9
- Sync Shield : 17 -> 7
- Audio Left : 6 -> 1
- Audio Left Shield : 4 -> 3
- Audio Right : 2 -> 5
- Audio Right Shield : 4 -> 3
- Ground : 21 -> 21
Result:
Using S-Video
Using Japanese RGB
Clearly, the color looks more natural. The image is also sharper and clearer, though I might be unable to capture the difference by camera.
